NORTH STONINGTON GARDEN CLUB SCHOOL PRESENTATION
“Nature’s Recycling”

“Mother Nature never wastes anything…” Dr. Joanna Negri told the 5th grade in Miss Hines class at the North Stonington Elementary School recently. Sun, air and water in time can turn a forest floor of leaves into rich humus. Home gardeners speed up the process of making humus by decomposing lawn clippings, dried plants, shredded paper and kitchen waste to make nature’s best plant food – compost. Dr. Negri used slides of her garden to describe the process. She even included photos of her chickens eating bugs and worms in her compost bins. The insects aid in breaking down the material . Other insects are necessary in a garden she said, and showed photos of bees and butterflies in her garden pollinating the fruit and flowers. Lady bugs and praying mantis function as natural predators of leaf eaters. Dr. Negri’s garden is a healthy eco friendly garden without chemical fertilizers or pesticides and is a certified Backyard Habitat for birds and wild life. Students asked questions throughout the talk and at the end discussed ways to make their yards a Backyard Habitat.
Joanne Negri has a doctorate degree in organic chemistry and runs English Borders LLC, an organic garden design business. She is also a member of the North Stonington Garden Club, who sponsored her talk as part of their School Program. The Garden Club is moving their Plant Sale to the grounds of the NS Elementary School on May 6 this year.

NORTH STONINGTON GARDEN CLUB PLANT SALE
IS ON THE MOVE
The North Stonington Elementary School is the new location for the North Stonington Garden Club Plant Sale this year on Saturday, May 8 from 9AM to 1PM. Using the school grounds provides more exhibition space for the plants and other gardening related items at the Sale. The Club is locally famous for the hundreds of perennial plants that members dig from their gardens. Also for sale are annuals – both pots and hanging baskets, herbs and the Club’s Heirloom Tomatoes raised from seed with new varieties at each sale. This year the Garden Rummage Sale features used Garden Books and Magazines and a Master Gardener’s booth to answer customers gardening questions.
This very visible location right off Route 2 is easy to find and has better and safer parking for customers. Visit the North Stonington Plant Sale for your Mother’s Day shopping.

Latest Info on Late Blight of Tomatoes, Potatoes
From the University of Massachusetts Cooperative Extension Center
Some key points: The late-blight pathogen can only survive the winter on living tissue, such as undug potatoes or discarded plants buried in compost piles. Buy disease-resistant tomato varieties, and don't use last year's potatoes as seed tubers. Read the whole bulletin for details (pdf file).
