Valentine times four: N. Stonington family celebrates with Nubian goat quadruplets

North Stonington - Valentino and his three sisters haven't yet ventured beyond the wooden shed with heat lamps, hay bale and ready access to their floppy-eared mother and her milk, but thanks to their owners, the Caswell family, the world outside is starting to know about them.

A Note of Thanks from Regina Hescock

I would like to extend a note of appreciation to everyone who attended Bill's memorial gathering on January 8. The hundreds of expressions of condolence are evidence of a life lived with affection, compassion and humor. I know that he would have felt truly humbled by the presence of so many people. Bill did not possess an ounce of self-importance and would probably had said that he was "just doing his bit."

I am grateful to Amy Kennedy, the Wheeler Library Board of Trustees and Friends of Wheeler Library for organizing the tribute to Bill. It was a party he would love: wine, food, cheap beer and laughter. Sincere thanks to all of the neighbors and friends who contributed the food. Students from the Chikumbuso club at school helped in so many ways. Tom Dinoto and Shane Divine provided the technology for the evening which truly made the spoken remembrances meaningful to so many. I especially wish to thank Bill's pool playing buddy, Maureen Macinko, for scaring up their favorite brew. Who else would drink Shaeffer? To each of the speakers, Marco, Rob, Adam, Bill (the other Bill), and Carolyn, musicians Liam Cooney and Matthew Slocum, who made the gathering so personal and beautiful, thank you for doing the impossible. Thanks to Jill, Tim and Ashley Skidgell for providing sustenance for our spirits and stomachs; Ray Geer, who actually tried to buy cheap wine (Bill's preference), but was unable to compromise his palette quite that much; Colleen Hawrylik for parting with her special whiskey for Bill's sake (again); Christopher Slocum for generously lighting up the very excellent cigars for Bill's send off; my sisters, Lisa Slocum, Moira Fain and Karen Hescock for their love, support and organization before, during and after the memorial. Owen, Lindsey and Madeline kept everything under control. Joan Slocum, who despite losing our dad, Robert Slocum, on 2 January 2009, was a trooper and insisted that the evening, indeed the entire week, be about Billy, her friend, adopted son and finally, son-in-law.

I am profoundly moved by all of you who came out for Bill. The outpouring of affection from so many friends and neighbors was amazing. I know that you understand why I could not have possibly spoken to everyone, but your gathering together made the evening what it was. Thank you for that memory. It is one that I will always cherish.

Too soon gone, our friend the adventurer, counselor and love. To paraphrase Bill, who stole it from Brent, who probably swiped it from someone else..."Here's to my husband of too few years," may you be happy hitch-hiking the universe and roaming the stars.

With deepest gratitude and appreciation,
Regina

Bulletin Board’s Roving Reporter Wins Award!

Hello All and Happy New Year!

I just wanted you to know that I was presented an award at the Comcast Public Access TV annual open house a couple weeks ago. It was the “Outstanding Producer 2009” for the tapes produced of The League of Women Voters Forums.

I thought it would be appropriate to share this with you because, after all, it was all your work that created a forum to videotape in the first place.

Now I don’t believe for a minute that the videos were of the quality that deserve this award, especially since the Public Access Coordinator went on an on about the amount of time and effort I put into the tapes and not a word about technical merit. I believe it was more a question of “A” for effort, but I will accept that and keep trying to get better.

Thank you for providing me with the opportunity to receive this award. It's rather fun having this little gold naked man, standing on my shelf either holding a laurel wreath or ripping his chest open.

Here's hoping we have a good and very productive new year.
