Wednesdays at the

In Memoriam

Remember that small-bell sound? The screen
door smacked (never quite shut) and we were in
a tranquil universe, respite from the day’s rush,
from matched sterility and mindless din.
Gregorian chants enveloped us--so lush between
the scents of patchouli and peppermint oil,
herbal potpourris, soaps, dried flowers…

And we wish that we had stayed more hours
to savor every one of Laurie’s soups:
the chunkiest chicken noodle, chili, curried
corn, potato leek, roasted red pepper,
white bean with kale, Kapusta--
The home made pies: from spinach to apple
to multi-berry; the cookies in glass jars

You and I were regulars on Wednesdays…
Once we’d chosen our wobbly wooden seats
Laurie took one look at us and knew
we wanted to share that turkey-on-wheat
(lettuce, tomato and a slice of onion?)
plus one bowl of soup each, or a stew,
on the plaid tablecloth of orange-purple hue

We drank our tea from painted porcelain mugs
Sitting by the front window, we overlooked
the yellow gristmill and the bridge, now blocked
that old post office, once our lawyer’s place--
God took him too, and we begin to realize
not even FEMA funding can replace
the heart of a village swept into the torrents

The river, harmless for a hundred years,
riled itself into a rage from too much rain,
broke the bridge’s ancient stone arc
and took down (before Wednesday--can’t go again!)
that serene universe of the Watermark.
Imagine the refrigerator crash, the dishes tables chairs
and all the knick-knacks sliding off the walls…

The firemen rescued an urn of ashes from the piano
(although not the piano), while the small wooden statue
of St Francis-- which had stood on the  window sill
with the bird nests-- came floating back on its own.
