Selectmen meet every Tuesday (except for about 6 miscellaneous weeks during the year) at 7:00 PM, at New Town Hall. Meetings usually last 2 1/2 - 3 hours. An equal amount of time during the week is spent preparing for the meeting, attending other board meetings, looking at properties and otherwise spending time on things having to do with being a selectman. There is a salary of $2,400/year for each selectman. The term of office is 2 years.

Qualifications: A sense of civic duty, love for your fellow townspeople, general knowledge of the town, and the ability and patience to be a good listener.

According to Statute (Ch. 91, Sec. 7-12a) “First selectman to be chief executive officer and ex-officio member of town boards, commissions and committees. Unless otherwise provided by law, the first selectman, in each town for which its board of selectman is the executive authority, shall be the chief executive officer of such town and shall be an ex-officio member, without vote, of all town boards, commissions and committees; provided nothing herein shall be construed to affect any special act which gives the first selectman the power to vote on such boards, commissions and committees.” The salary for first selectman is $48,500/year. It is a 2-year term.

The office of Town Clerk is a 2-year term, full-time position at a salary of $38,846/year. Minimum age is 18. The Town Clerk may not simultaneously serve as selectman or registrar of voters.

The Town Clerk is a public official responsible for keeping town records and issuing licenses. The office handles a variety of tasks including the recording and indexing of land records, filing of maps, trade names and military discharges (DD214). It issues marriage licenses, liquor permits and voter ID cards and registers Justices of the Peace and Notaries, issues and files births, deaths and marriage certificates. Hunting, fishing and trapping licenses, may be purchased throughout the year. Pheasant Tags, Duck Stamps and Dog Licenses are also sold.

The Town Treasurer holds a 2-year term, is a part-time position and pays a salary of $5,820/year. According to state code:

Sec. 7-80. Duties of treasurer. Appointment of deputy. (a) The town treasurer shall receive all money belonging to the town, pay it out on the order of the proper authority and keep a record of all moneys received and when received and of all moneys paid out, when, for what and upon whose authority, which record shall always be open to the inspection of any taxpayer in such town and shall be presented to each annual town meeting, being first sworn to by him and adjusted by the selectmen. The town treasurer shall be, ex officio, treasurer of the town trust funds and may appoint a deputy who shall, in the absence or disability of the town treasurer, perform all his duties
